Backfire. If someone doesn't want to battle the curses... and wished for that, I can imagine at least a few ways that could play out. For example: they might be erased. Invisible. Unnoticeable. Stripped of feeling. The wraiths—the curses of which I speak—prey on people for their capacity for emotion. An emotionless husk has little to offer them. Or perhaps they simply do not see the one who made a wish ... and neither does anyone else.
Another: they are granted little to no power to fight. The wraiths target them nonetheless. Without offering a struggle, they are overwhelmed by the curses, and are taken away by— the Law of Cycles. If they are dead, then they also do not have to fight, correct?

From some points of view, it is fair because the wish will be granted. Whatever miracle you ask for will indeed come true, one way or another. [ won't it? she never did become strong enough to protect madoka, did she? but perhaps... ] But we have little control over how it is, unless the wording is extremely careful ... and even then, there may still be consequences unforeseen.
