Mesdames et Messieurs, Voilà, C'est Vous

Bievenue

You're wrapped in a soothing, all-encompassing darkness.

Well, perhaps not perfectly all-encompassing -- you can see some slivers of light here and there, just enough to realize that your current space is literally wrapped in something, and that you are a highly customized burrito at the mercy of an entirely too fluffy bed and set of blankets. Moreover: you are definitely not alone.

Depending upon the contents of your bed (two of you, waking up dressed exactly in what you wore last you remember back where each of you came from, in the exact same state as those last moments no matter how illogical or disjointed), it may not be comfortable or feasible to stay cocooned up for much longer. There's a low, muted GONG, GONGG coming from not far away, your bed creaks like a beleaguered ship in an unannounced storm, and it is joined by even more noises of movement beyond the bed canopy as you try to take stock of where you are.

Eventually, you either fall out of bed or drag yourself into this world: your new and strangely crowded personal rooms, the clock insistently sounding out the hour, and the halls and heraldry of the venerable Château Ambregris -- a lavishly decorated and fully furnished version of a more-or-less authentic French castle (assuming you know what France or a castle are).

Left to your own devices for the moment, you may find it helpful to explore the castle for your own purposes, check out the suspicious statues and personalized plaques in the Promenade of Reflexion, or perhaps to try to get to the bottom of the mysterious and frankly alarming amount of bread piled up in front of the place settings in the Banquet Hall. (Were you thinking of escaping? Any attempts to leave the property will be met with no forward progress at all, treadmill style). There's just about every kind of loaf, roll, boule, baguette, croissant or even animal-shaped bread you can think of stacked in baskets. There's absolutely nothing else save for plain bread, but at least you won't starve.

[OOC: Welcome to Château Ambregris, a perfectly normal castle receiving perfectly normal guests. Feel free to ask any questions in discord! The NPC Meet & Greet will be later today, March 8 at 6 PM EST/3 PM PST.]

I am.

I'm the ice dragon, Tiamat. There's no ice spirit who's more powerful than me in all the Spirit World.

( oh everything makes sense now

Hwylryn lights up!! )

Oh! I'm like you, but of the seas, and the sky above it. ( A dragon, he means. ) But where I used to live, the ocean was mostly ice for miles out, so it's something familiar.

( He laughs lightly, breezily. )

I'm not as strong as someone who's devoted themselves to power, but I think that's all right enough. Most dragons I've met are more like you than me.

( They can pursue their passions, and he can chill.

Still, he's being pretty humble; he was pretty dang strong back home. But that's irrelevant here, so he doesn't find it particularly important to mention. )

[Oh?

She eyes him while he goes on, somewhat thrown by his remark about his relationship with power. He's a dragon; ergo, he has to be incredibly powerful, no matter what he says. He reminds her of Ragnar, if only Ragnar knew humility—but there's something else there, too.
]

Dragons are the strongest forms spirits can take, and all spirits vye to claim the Spirit World's throne. Are you saying that, as a dragon, you don't care?

[personal profile] coldseep 2025-03-09 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Uh-huh. I don't think I know much about this throne, but...

( His eyes grow watery - naturally, he can only explain himself by explaining his context, and his context asks him to think of Gwawlyn, and thinking of Gwawlyn makes him want to cry. An open wound, thousands and thousands of years later.

But he'll do his best not to get too teary in front of another dragon, since he figures she probably won't like it much. )

... Well, my brother cared a lot more about being strong. So I wanted to support him. That's all. He did call me a fool, but can one help what they love?

( Familial love is a little bit less of a given among most dragons, so his brother was right to call him a fool - not that he's changed his course from sentimentality, even now. )

[Tia has never seen a dragon cry. Dragons are proud and arrogant. They don't do crying, because they're above such vulnerabilities. She, shed a tear? Unthinkable. If something bothers her, she crushes it—simple as that.

As she watches the moisture well in his eyes with her own wide pair, Tia realizes that their kind can cry. It's a sight so alien that her brow creases in bafflement.
]

Are you . . . crying?

[Just making sure.]

[personal profile] coldseep 2025-03-09 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
( Busted. Well, now he supposes he's free to press a palm to the corner of his eye to wipe away the wetness; no need to be discrete. )

Yep. ( the first dragon to ever do it...... or so his peers would tell him ) Sorry. It's probably weird for you. I just miss him a lot.

( He apologizes, but he doesn't seem guilty or ashamed - he does not promise to stop sooner than his feelings tell him he will. His pride and obstinacy is not with power - it's simply being resolutely who he is, and who he is this teary thing, at least for the next little bit. )

[Definitely the first weepy dragon.]

. . . It's unusual, but that doesn't concern me. Don't waste your breath on apologies.

[It's his pride(?), not hers. If anything, she's reminded of the twin spirits from the Spirit World, and how inseparable they are. If they ever get eaten, it'll be together . . . probably.]

What happened to him?

( A beat. )

... We had two, close friends. Twins like us. They were wizards... weaker.

( Weaker, but not weak. Dragons are simply that strong. And yet, )

They baited Gwawlyn's pride and arrogance, and they trapped him. They killed him very slowly.

( His voice is wet, but the tears slowly recede. )

I got my revenge eventually. ( Violence is still his native tongue. ) But I don't even know if he even expected me to avenge him.

Maybe for dragons strong as you and him, death is just deserved when you slip up. ( He looks to her, pensive - earnest? ) What would you want?

[personal profile] frostlight 2025-03-10 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[So like a cat with its prey, the twin wizards played with his brother until the latter ceased to be responsive.

The death of a spirit is by no means shocking. Tia isn't upset at the idea of killing or being killed; on the other hand, it's still jarring when a dragon anywhere succumbs, just like that. Tia's pride is great enough that she's never entertained the thought of dying at another's hand, but thinking about it now . . .
]

What I want is irrelevant the moment I die. I don't expect to be avenged.

[Who would? The weak bow before the strong in her world.]

But if the person you've sworn to protect falls, isn't it natural to mete out punishment?

( She says it like it's simple, when it's something Hwylryn's been mulling over for as many years as Gwawlyn had been alive - or maybe even more. His recollection of time is vague, but her words cut clear and fresh through the swamp.

It might not be a cure for his sentimental affliction, but he can hoard these answers until he figures these things out himself, if he does at all. He has a little bit of time to spare here to ponder, after all. )

... That's true. I think... Gwawlyn probably would've said the same thing.

( He laughs lightly. )

Maybe I'd feel less complicated about it if I'd taken after either of you. Though... I suppose, if I had, I'd be in competition with you for this throne, or other things. I wouldn't want that.

[personal profile] frostlight 2025-03-10 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
[She'll say. She can't remember the last time one of her kind carried such sentimental beliefs. He's odd and soft, yet a fierce dragon who'd speak with violence all the same, so he's more familiar than he is alien despite complicating matters with ruminations.

Tia has always been more straightforward. Mingling with humans has muddled that somewhat, though.
]

What do you want, then?
coldseep: (pic#17071740)

[personal profile] coldseep 2025-03-10 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
( He considers this, but doesn't need too long. )

... I want to be with the people I like and love, and I want to relax with them; have fun with them. I'd be happy with just that.
frostlight: (02)

[personal profile] frostlight 2025-03-11 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's it?

[She stares long and seemingly hard at him. Is he for real? Not even the most benign spirit lords think this way.]

. . . I'd never met or heard of a dragon like you before.
coldseep: (pic#17625813)

[personal profile] coldseep 2025-03-12 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard that before.

( For better or for worse - he doesn't quite fit in with his kind, and he doesn't quite fit in anywhere else, either. )

But now that you've met one, what do you think?

( yelp rating? )
frostlight: (03)

[personal profile] frostlight 2025-03-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Hmm.]

Let me ask you this: What does it mean to you to be a dragon of the sea and the sky?
coldseep: (pic#17728081)

[personal profile] coldseep 2025-03-13 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
( He falls quiet for a few moments, considering this. )

... For me, and maybe me alone... I see myself as an expression of the aspects from which I was born. As the skies form a storm over the endless ocean, so was I born. I think... it's for me to not to rule over it, as if I were a separate thing... but live as the truest expression of myself as I can be, unadulterated as a raging torrent or a gentle wind.

( ... not that he hasn't compromised that "no need to rule" bit for love, but... shhh... )

[★★★★☆]

We dragons embody our elements.

[The presence of one alone can cause natural disasters in the material realm. It's a true expression of their elemental nature and power.]

Fire dragons are ill-tempered while ice dragons are sharp like ice. Water and wind are different and not the same . . . but they flow more than the other elements. [And so, to answer his earlier question:] Not all dragons are spirit lords. You're just being true to your nature.

( omg 🥺

Hwylryn smiles, bright and warm. )

... That makes me really happy to hear.

( And it might be silly for him to care for her opinion - by dragon standards, anyway - but coming from a time of fragility as he was, he can't help but exalt it a little bit. )

My review isn't quite as thorough, but I think you're wonderful, too. I'd be honored if you could remember me when you ascend the throne.

( not if, but when! )

[Why is he so happy about that? She blinks at his equally earnest evaluation, then sighs mildly, choosing to take his sincerity in stride.]

I couldn't forget someone like you even if I tried. . . . But you're right. Sooner than later, I'll ascend the ice throne.
