TRIAL II

Trial

At least this time you were given ample time to wreck your sleep schedule before the clocks gong at midnight (no apologies for such little sleep in the first place withstanding). The carnival looks just as you remember it, with the banquet and drinks refreshed. The spread is the same as before with two new additions: a platter of cute cupcakes that might remind you of someone, along with baozi of all types.

Like before, mind the pit in the middle and settle in to vote out the guilty party for the death of Siobhan "Shiv" Roy. With the benefit of experience, maybe this will be a little bit easier? With the mood weather lifted, there won't be any floods at trial at least.

(( OOC: Welcome to your first trial! You'll have 7 hours (until 8 PM EDT/5 PM PDT) to vote one (1) person guilty of murder. As this is scapegoat style, a correct vote is not necessary. Please remember to vote unless otherwise discussed with the mods, as that is our AC for this game ))

If you were already aiming to kill, why wouldn't you?

Just feels excessive. There are other ways to do it.

[She shrugs.]

Someone inexperienced may think that's a fast way to kill.

[Which it isn't, apparently. It's rather unpleasant. With some luck, Shiv fell unconscious quick]
obtect: (ever seen you before)

Right. It’s like going off something you’d see in a movie, or whatever.

Someone with expertise. I wouldn't expect an amateur to land something that precise.

[Look, this may be the opposite of what Scarlet is saying but shush!!]

[personal profile] ocenon 2025-03-22 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly. There's also the possibility that Siobhan herself was laid prone, and that made the critical move all the more easy to make, struggle or not.

[ he'd say like shooting fish in a barrel, but he doesn't know that's a phrase. ]

[personal profile] arbalestrier 2025-03-22 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose. But they were able to strike the heart without hitting any of the ribs. Even it was easier, they must have ample knowledge of human anatomy.
siffriend: (049)

[personal profile] siffriend 2025-03-22 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Or a lucky strike.

[ Critical hits get easier as you level up. ]
arbalestrier: (➡ glock 19)

[personal profile] arbalestrier 2025-03-22 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's possible. But there was a stab underneath her ribs as well. That is another method of striking the heart.

[He's just down this rabbit hole, don't mind him...]

[personal profile] whileaway 2025-03-22 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
A woman laid out with a dagger to the heart sounds incredibly symbolic. It's a hard blow to make without hitting a rib when using it to kill, yes, but it wouldn't be hard if she was already incapacitated and its use was entirely a message to those who would find her.
littlegentleman: (36)

[personal profile] littlegentleman 2025-03-22 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would someone want to leave a message...?
whileaway: (Default)

[personal profile] whileaway 2025-03-22 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That would depend on the who's leaving the message, if it even is one. It's not an efficient or east way to kill, and most people who fight with a blade would know that. It's undeniably dramatic though. If she was already in the process of dying from the other injury, it wouldn't have been a necessary hit and just something for show. If they wanted her to die faster, then a cut to the throat would have been both faster, easier, and more efficient.
littlegentleman: (82)

[personal profile] littlegentleman 2025-03-22 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true...

[Someone dramatic...]
arbalestrier: (➡ glock 19)

[personal profile] arbalestrier 2025-03-22 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[He shakes his head.]

She wasn't dead for long. Most likely the dagger was left in her body when the attacker fled.

[not like they can fingerprint it rip]
whileaway: (pic#17734422)

[personal profile] whileaway 2025-03-22 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Having that be the "finishing move" when someone could go for the throat at that point makes no sense. It's harder to hit, and if she didn't die fast enough, there's no guarantee someone else wouldn't find her and talk before she died.

She must have already been mostly dead when the heart was stabbed.

And a dagger to the heart is needed for that?

But we're lacking the cows.

Slitting her throat would be bloodier and would make clean up more difficult.

[As for the speculation she was mostly dead...]

There was a pool of blood underneath her that could have come from the abdomen. You could be correct about that point.
whileaway: (pic#17734475)

[personal profile] whileaway 2025-03-22 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the other damage in the area like the hedges, the killer might not have cared too much about if they got hit with blood. Without the fire in the library, everyone else might have remained asleep until morning which would have been more than enough time to clean up.
antemeridian: (↻ genuinely immensely)

[personal profile] antemeridian 2025-03-22 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Checking for it now would be unlikely to reveal anything, unless they are particularly sloppy, since we've had the entire day to rest... but given that we did awaken early, I don't suppose anyone was seen to be particularly disheveled or bloodied in the moments after awakening?

From the evidence, it seems she struggled with her attacker quite a bit. It wouldn't be strange for them to damage the hedges, and leaves are less incriminating than being found with bloodied clothing.
